Ahh. The sweet smell of GOP desperation.
Do you get the feeling that the whole Sandy Berger thing isn't making sense? That's because it is a minor issue that is being spun to humongous proportions by frantic Republicans in an attempt to stop *W's imminent cratering. We have nonstop news channel coverage, a House investigation starting up and wild claims being tossed out on hate-er, I mean, "talk" radio of "hundreds of pages" stuffed in his socks.
Funny how a minor, low level investigation that is over 10 months old just happens to escalate into a national security crisis just at this time, isn't it? Keep your eye on the 9/11 and Plame indictment ball...
Reality challenged.
We have a president who takes pride in not reading newspapers. He gets all of the information he needs about the outside world from his staff. Maybe that's not such a good idea.
Bush:
"... Remember, we discovered mass graves with hundreds of thousands of men and women, and children, clutching their little toys, as a result of this person's brutality."
But in fact, that hadn't happened. Not in November 2003 when this interview was taped, and not now. I'm not claiming that Saddam wasn't a bad guy who killed a lot of people. He was. He did. The point here is that our chief executive doesn't have a clue as to what is really happening in the great big world outside the beltway. This recent article shows that even Tony Blair can eventually figure it out:
"...Downing Street has admitted to The Observer that repeated claims by Tony Blair that '400,000 bodies had been found in Iraqi mass graves' is untrue, and only about 5,000 corpses have so far been uncovered."
But not George Bush. Don't hold your breath waiting for an admission of error; George doesn't make mistakes, remember? If this was an isolated occurrence that would be one thing, but this goes on all the time. Remember
Cheney insisting on Iraq/Al Qaeda ties? Or George
claiming that the weapons labs had been found?
These things are not true. They didn't happen. The whole world knows this; even our "allies" in this misguided adventure.
But not the White House. Doesn't that worry you? (Thanks, Kos)

Nothing could melt away my father's calm dispassionate logic faster, and cause him an agonizing conniption fit, than mentioning that I had re-read "Unsafe at Any Speed" for the umpteenth time.
Draft Ditka?
The Republicans in Illinois are truly desperate.
"...After reviewing the upbeat polling results of NON-candidate Ditka, and faced with no Republican candidate for an election less than four months away, Americans for Better Choices has decided to take the choice directly to the people. "Under Illinois election law, the people can directly elect a person to office without a party nomination by using the write-in vote," said Hug..."
Interestingly, the outfit that has been doing the polling which "so strongly indicates " that Ditka is the people's choice, 21st Century Campaigns LLC, is run by a perennial failed candidate for office, Steve Denari.
Mr. Denari first appeared on the political scene in the early '90's, as a democrat.
He lost. Then he switched to the Reform party.
He lost. Then He switched to the Republican party.
He lost.
In the mid '90's he came up with a story about President Clinton fathering an illegitimate child with a prostitute. He claimed to have proof consisting of a birth certificate and canceled checks from Clinton.
His story got some attention in the right-wing press, but faded away when DNA tests (using the Lewinsky results) showed that he wasn't the father. Denari never produced the birth certificate or the checks.
So evidently he is not just a perennial loser, but a liar as well. And the people ofIllinois are supposed to mount a write-in campaign based on his "poll results"? Please.

Approximately 10 minutes later, that same flight attendant came by with the drinks cart. She leaned over and quietly told my husband there were federal air marshals sitting all around us. She asked him not to tell anyone and explained that she could be in trouble for giving out that information.
