Sometimes I hate being right

ABC News:
HODGES SAID HE WAS MISLED BY CBS: Retired Maj. General Hodges, Killian's supervisor at the Grd, tells ABC News that he feels CBS misled him about the documents they uncovered. According to Hodges, CBS told him the documents were "handwritten" and after CBS read him excerpts he said, "well if he wrote them that's what he felt."

Hodges also said he did not see the documents in the 70's and he cannot authenticate the documents or the contents. His personal belief is that the documents have been "computer generated" and are a "fraud".
I certainly hope that CBS was smart enough to record their conversation with Hodges.

See the previous post for reference.

I know nothing of fonts...

but if the Killian Memos that paint George W Bush as less than deserving of his honorable discharge are such obvious forgeries that they can be shredded within a few days, who had the motive to pass them through TANG and GOP channels to CBS?

Karl Rove, that's who.

Who knows? They might be real. They might be fake. But two things make me really, truly suspicious.

1) According to the WaPo:
A senior CBS official, who asked not to be named because CBS managers did not want to go beyond their official statement, named one of the network's sources as retired Maj. Gen. Bobby W. Hodges, the immediate superior of the documents' alleged author, Lt. Col. Jerry B. Killian. He said a CBS reporter read the documents to Hodges over the phone and Hodges replied that "these are the things that Killian had expressed to me at the time."
...
The official said the network regarded Hodges's comments as "the trump card" on the question of authenticity, as he is a Republican who acknowledged that he did not want to hurt Bush. Hodges, who declined to grant an on-camera interview to CBS, did not respond to messages left on his home answering machine in Texas.

2) Why in the hell would the Whitehouse be sending out copies of these memos if they are not putting the ball on a tee in order to knock it off?

(and what about the possibility that one or two of the memos are real, but forgeries have been added to debunk all of them?)

Very odd.

Until CBS reveals all of its sources, the speculation will not go away.

Amy and Ethan

I was 8 years old when Jimmy Carter defeated Gerald Ford in the 1976 presidential election. It is the first election that I have a clear recollection of. I remember my third grade classmates squaring off in the lunchroom at Trombly Elementary, taunting each other with chants like; "Ford! Ford! He's our man! Let's throw Carter in the garbage can!" and, of course, vice versa. Politics have never been a highbrow affair in my mind.

There was something else about Jimmy Carter's election that I remember very clearly. President Carter chose to send his 8-year-old (the same age as me!) to Stevens Elementary -- a Washington, D.C., public school -- instead of to one of the bevy of private academies that almost all of the children of the beltway elite have attended for decades.

Recently this tidbit of history took on new significance to me. Last Thursday my son started kindergarten at Brayton Elementary, a public school that has seen its reputation dragged through the mud in recent years.

Unsolicited Campaign Advice

When John Kerry is eventually asked if he condemns the allegations of cocaine use, statutory rape and illegal abortions that are being leveled against "W", the following answer should suffice:
I condemn any lie against my opponent as strongly as he condemned the lies made against me.

... followed by a campaign spokeperson wringing his/her hands saying "Gee, the allegations against Bush are troubling. Maybe the press should try to find out the truth... for everybody's sake"

If you know this guy....

Please go to this sight and post his identity in the comments.

He is such a manly GOP Conventioneer that he thought it appropriate to drag down and kick a female protestor at the RNC even though the Secret Service Agents were obviously in control.

The woman was arrested. The GOP Manly Man was not.

“There’s a lot of money to pay for this that doesn’t have to be U.S. taxpayer money, and it starts with the assets of the Iraqi people…and on a rough recollection, the oil revenues of that country could bring between $50 and $100 billion over the course of the next two or three years…We’re dealing with a country that can really finance its own reconstruction, and relatively soon.” -Paul Wolfowitz
