I'm So Relieved.
For several years I've been despairing over what is to become of our great country. The apparent incompetence of our top leadership has left me little room for hope. For the life of me, I couldn't fathom how anyone not insane or stupid could rationally go into Iraq--and cut taxes too, when we have so many other very real challenges and threats to our security these days.
All of the worst predictions for this misadventure have come true:
1. We are stuck to a tarbaby. Iraqi elections in January? Sure, go ahead and hold 'em. They will have the same effect as "Sovereignty" did, back in June. Remember that? Remember when Rummy said that all of the violence leading up to that date would subside afterwards
? I do.
2.New and real threats are emerging and we are not in a position to do anything about them; except for using strong language and calling in an airstrike or two. The countries in question are fully aware of this. In fact, there is strong evidence that Iran helped Chalabi justify the Iraq war to the Bushies
for just this reason.
3. Afghanistan has turned into a steaming hot bowl of crap. Sure, the Taliban is restricted to the outlying provinces, but the security situation there is steadily eroding. At least poppy production is at an all-time high
. Always try to find the bright side, right?
4. Foreign currency markets are beginning to notice that the Dollar has nothing to prop it up anymore
. Are you old enough to remember stagflation? That's ok, we'll all get a refresher very soon. The really cool difference is that this time consumer debt levels are so high
that rising interest rates will produce an unprecedented flood of defaults and bankruptcies.
And all this time, I thought that the Bush administration was crazy or dumb. Turns out I was wrong:
They're just crooks.
